To Optimize Grain Terminal Operations, Start with the Proper Equipment
Whether you’re planning a new grain terminal from the ground up or looking to improve the performance of an existing facility, proper barge positioning equipment plays a critical role in operational efficiency, safety, and long-term success. Working with equipment experts early, and throughout the life of your terminal, can help ensure your investment delivers maximum value while avoiding costly missteps.
From equipment selection and layout planning to modernization strategies, experienced marine equipment partners like Patterson Manufacturing bring specialized insight that makes grain terminal operations safer, easier, and faster.

Expert Guidance for New Grain Terminal Development
When developing a new grain terminal, consulting with equipment experts during the earliest planning stages can significantly improve the facility’s long-term performance. Our team can help you think strategically about key factors such as winch placement, equipment sizing, control systems, river current, fleeting angles, and overall site layout.
Proper equipment sizing is especially critical. Undersized equipment can limit operational capacity and flexibility as volumes grow, while oversized equipment can result in unnecessary capital costs and inefficiencies. Working with an experienced team can help you strike the right balance by aligning equipment capabilities with actual operational needs, both now and in the future.
Overall, understanding your technical requirements for marine equipment early in the design phase will streamline planning, enable proactive decision-making, and help determine layouts that maximize efficiency while minimizing wear, downtime, and maintenance.

Case
in Point
Our team has been called upon for equipment needs late in the development process only to discover that terminal layouts were designed without accounting for the proper fleeting angle needed for the winches to spool correctly. Improper winch spooling not only affects daily performance but also accelerates equipment wear and increases the risk of downtime. Consulting with experts early can prevent these issues, ensuring that equipment placement supports smooth, reliable operations from day one.
Optimizing and Upgrading Existing Grain Terminals
Patterson’s expertise is just as valuable when upgrading or improving an existing grain terminal. Over time, facilities can evolve, and equipment configurations that once made sense may no longer align with current operational demands.
Our team can evaluate existing layouts and advise on relocating equipment to improve efficiency and safety. We can also help you navigate constraints such as limited space, power availability, or fixed infrastructure by developing creative, practical solutions that work within those limitations.
For terminals with aging or outdated equipment, we can also help develop strategic replacement plans – prioritizing upgrades, minimizing disruptions, and aligning timelines with operational and budgetary goals.

In many facilities, equipment has been added or modified over decades and “grandfathered in” without a comprehensive reassessment. At one facility we visited, cable lines from legacy equipment were interfering with walking paths, creating safety hazards, while the overall configuration was reducing operational efficiency. Our team was able to identify these issues and recommend layout changes and equipment upgrades to improve both safety and performance, without requiring a full facility overhaul.

What Goes into a Barge Haul System for Grain Terminal Operations?
An effective barge haul system hinges on a minimum of two winches working against each other and in tandem, often controlled via variable frequency drives using torque feedback, rotary switches, or other sensors. These winches control steel or synthetic rope to move barges into position with high accuracy and minimal manual input from the operator, allowing for smooth operation with less manpower and more control.

The core component of most Patterson Barge Haul Systems is our 90-ton winch. This is paired with one or more breasting winches to keep the barge tight to the shore loading facility. These winches can be operated manually, or by using VFDs as a constant tension operation, depending upon the application and the customer's preferences.

To streamline the system and achieve maximum control over barges, we can integrate programmable control systems to electronically coordinate winch operation. System interfaces can be mounted locally at a winch, in a control station or crow's nest, or done remotely via radio frequency.
