The Challenge

Buzzi Unicem’s terminal in Sayler Park, Ohio maneuvers barges upriver against the swift current of the Ohio River — a challenging task using just the capstan-and-ropes system they relied on at other facilities. The goal for their new terminal was to implement a winch system that was automated and easier to use to provide more safety while moving barges.

Tailored Solution

The Patterson Team designed a barge haul system tailored to the terminal’s operations, featuring two Barge Haul Winches (1 upriver and 1 downriver), a Low Profile Breasting Winch, a Dual Winch Control Panel, and a Breasting Winch Control Panel. Since operating with a Patterson Barge Haul System, Buzzi has experienced greater control and safety when moving barges. The Buzzi team specifically noted that safety is a top priority for their operations and that they have experienced significant improvements in efficiency and safety with the new system.
